The Cost of Opportunity.

Imagine its 8am on a Monday morning, your alarm clock is screaming at you to get up after only a few hours of rest. Do you turn it off, groan and fall back asleep or get up and get ready for the day? I think most of us would love to fall right back asleep but this extra sleep comes at a price, as does everything in life. We are losing precious moments of our day, class time, time to do our homework or time to experience things we aren't expecting. With all that said and done, is it really worth that extra hour of sleep? Yesterday, I was doing some reading for my microeconomics class and a principle they were teaching really hit home for me. Its called the Principle of Opportunity Cost. If any of you have taken this class before than you know where this is going. This lesson explained that every choice we make comes at a cost, we are giving up resources for one thing while trying to achieve another. I started to think about my life and some of the choices I make, I'd like to think that most of them are decent ones, but when it comes to school..lately I've been slacking. Every day we are given 24 hours, 1440 minutes, 86,400 seconds to make choices, to experience things and to make something of our day. Every day we debit our account of life and once those moments are gone, they are lost forever. They can never be credited back, there are no refunds, and definitely no loans. The question is: what are you doing with your time? If you were to look back in 10 years, would you be proud of what you spent your time doing? Was there something to show for your time spent? We often lose sight of the purpose of life, other choices can cloud our minds and fog our priorities. The important thing as that we get back on track, we remember that life is short and days will only occur once in your lifetime. Who's to say you'll make it passed next week, or next month? There is no road map for your life, every place you end up was caused by a choice you made and every choice comes at a cost. The opportunity cost of something is what you sacrifice to get it. You may think at times that things are free, say for example your friend asks you to help them write a paper and in return they will buy you dinner. Seems fair right? Though you got a free dinner in return you still lost an hour out of your day to do so. Now, i'm not saying helping others is a waste of your time because that is very important but just remember that nothing in life is free. Every choice we make affects the choice after that one. You could spend your days playing video games, partying, doing anything but being productive, but at the end of the day ask yourself, was that worth my time? This was no meant to make you believe that every day of your life should be strictly business because as you know, I love life and I whole-heartily believe in having fun. Its just important to keep in the back of your mind, that every choice comes at a cost, and only you can decide if that sacrifice is worth it. Have a fantastic day and use your time wisely! :)
